London's EastEnders are Britain's most entertaining residents, if Monday night's TV Quick Awards are anything to go by. Because the enduring BBC soap walked away with three of the top awards at the annual prizegiving.

Jessie Wallace, who plays barmaid Cat Slater, took the best actress gong while Shane Ritchie, who is better-known as landlord Alfie Moon, won best newcomer. And producers of the hit series were given more reason to celebrate when they won the best soap award for the third year running.

The show's main rival, Coronation Street, was also singled out for honours, however. Brian Capron, who played serial killer Richard Hillman, took home the prize for best soap actor. And his chilling reign of terror, which kept the millions of viewers on the edge of their seats, was voted best soap storyline.

"I'd like to thank my co-stars," said Brian as he took the stage. "So a big thank you to my shovel, my crowbar and my glove."

Other big winners at the star-studded ceremony included Cold Feet's James Nesbitt, who won best actor, and cheeky chappies Ant and Dec, who won best entertainment show for Saturday Night Takeaway.

The glitzy event, which was held at the Dorchester Hotel in London's West End, was hosted by the inimitable Lily Savage star Paul O'Grady.
