Have I Got News For You's Paul Merton is mourning the loss of his wife, Sarah Parkinson, after the writer-producer lost her 19-month battle with breast cancer.

Forty-one-year-old Sarah, a BBC radio writer and producer, died on Tuesday morning with her husband at her bedside.

TV star Paul, 45, issued a touching statement to announce the sad news. "After her initial devastating diagnosis of cancer in February, 2002, Sarah successfully lived with the disease for the next 19 months.

"She refused chemotherapy because she knew it would finish her off. Instead, she boosted her immune system with a mixture of nutritional therapy, yoga, meditation, positive thinking and laughter. Consequently she led a full and active life right up to the last couple of weeks. She faced the situation with courage and died serenely and without pain."

The couple lived together for several years, and married in June, just over a year after Sarah had a lump removed from her breast. Though she appeared to be beating the disease in recent months, her condition suddenly worsened a few weeks ago.

Funeral details have not been announced, but it is thought that it will be a private family gathering.
