Heather Mills McCartney has promised to do everything in her power to save her old school from being closed. The mum-to-be was guest of honour at a prizegiving event in Usworth Comprehensive in Sunderland, which is due to be shut down.
Tuesday night was the first time in 20 years that Heather had visited the institution. And she promised to bring the closure plans to Prime Minister Tony Blair's attention the next time they meet.
Despite being heavily pregnant, the former model chatted with pupils about her charity work, before meeting with teachers and parents at the prizegiving. "I think it's terrible that they have gone over the heads of the teachers and pupils," she said. "The school will be shut over a four-year period, but they cannot tell them what will happen to them all when it closes."
Earlier in the day the 35-year-old met pupils at her old primary school, Usworth Grange, and showed off her bump to the excited youngsters. "I don't really have a beer belly, this is a baby in here," she joked. Heather spent her childhood attending the two schools before she and sister Fiona moved to London.
As a keen swimmer, she is upset that the area's only secondary school with a pool is to be shut down.
