American illusionist David Blaine is once again walking free after spending 44 days without food in a Perspex box in London.
The 30-year-old was cheered by a huge crowd of well-wishers as his see-through cell, which was suspended from a crane above the Thames, was lowered to the ground on Sunday night. Looking visibly weak from the experience, he broke down in tears as he was reunited with model girlfriend Manon.
"This has been one of the most important experiences of my life," said the magician, who is now sporting a beard and straggly hair. "I learned more in that box than I have in years."
After an initial medical examination at the scene, David was taken to a private clinic for further tests. In recent days he has suffered heart palpitations, breathing difficulties and blurred vision as a result of his fast.
And doctors warn that he will have to ease himself back onto solid food, as his body could not support any sudden changes. According to nutritional experts, he would risk death just by eating a sandwich, so he will have to stick to fluids and baby food for the next week.
It is thought the New Yorker, who lost an estimated 34 pounds during the stunt, could take up to six months to regain his full strength. In past weeks he has also had to endure relentless "Blaine-baiting", as members of the public hurled eggs, paint-bombs and golf balls at his temporary home. And he also faces a hefty bill from the Metropolitan Police, who have demanded payment for the extra security they had to provide.
