Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was looking characteristically informal when he dropped by to receive an MBE from the Queen. Dressed in an open-necked shirt and chunky silver chain, the culinary maestro gave a cheeky grin to photographers after the ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
"I like ties, but I prefer not to wear one when I'm nervous," said Jamie. "I checked beforehand and they said wear whatever you're comfortable in." His designer stubble and tousled hair didn't seem to bother Her Majesty, who smiled broadly while pinning the medal on his lapel.
Jamie has been widely praised for his charity restaurant 15, which helps unemployed youngsters. Each year the renowned eaterie takes on 15 hopefuls and trains them to become chefs.
Ubiquitous designer Alexander McQueen was also honoured at the ceremony, though he seemed somewhat unimpressed with Jamie's unfussy appearance. "I think Jamie should at least have worn a tie," said the fashion guru. "Whether ties are in or out, it just looks better." There was no doubt Alexander had put some thought into his attire, as he received his CBE in an eye-catching kilt and tartan sash.
