Chat show host Jonathan Ross was among the big winners at the 14th annual British Comedy awards on Wednesday, finally taking home a gong after years of leaving the show empty-handed.

"What took you so long?" said the comedian as he picked up the award for best comedy entertainment programme. "Genuinely, I'm touched. It's been a long string of defeats. My work here is done, I can go home at last and rest."

The comic joined a roster of UK celebs who came out on top, including best comedy actor Steve Coogan, best comedy actress Ronni Ancona and duo Ant and Dec, who scooped the favourite entertainment personality prize.

It was a night of double honours for the pair, as their show, Saturday Night Take Away also won the One.Tel People's Choice gong, voted by viewers.

British TV favourites Coupling and Cold Feet won in the comedy and comedy-drama categories, respectively, while US hit Malcolm In The Middle snagged the best international trophy and Calendar Girls was chosen as best comedy film.
