She created the single woman's heroine for the new millennium, Bridget Jones, but now author Helen Fielding has started a family of her own, giving birth to her first child, a baby boy.

The 43-year-old Bridget Jones's Diary creator and her American partner Kevin Curran welcomed the 7lb 5oz baby last Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Kevin, an Emmy award-winning writer for shows such as The Simpsons and Married With Children, says they are thrilled about the new arrival. "It all went very well and we're overjoyed," he said. "The baby currently has 12 names but we are working on narrowing it down a bit."

Helen, who gained fame with her tale of a calorie-counting London singleton on a search for love, has seen Bridget Jones make the jump to the big screen and blossom into a second book, The Edge Of Reason.

The film sequel, which reunites the stars from Bridget Jones's Diary, Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth, and will open in the UK this autumn.
