The world's top tennis players have been applying their warpaint for a showdown in the desert. Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati were among the stars who decorated themselves with henna tattoos as the Dubai Open tennis championship got underway in the United Arab Emirates.

Venus looked to have fully recovered from a recent knee injury, as an Emirati woman applied a complex pattern to her right leg. Just a few weeks ago she was forced to pull out of the Pan Pacific Open, but the hard-hitting American is said to be back on top form.

Jennifer, meanwhile, opted to have both her legs and her arm adorned with henna designs. The New Yorker made quite an impression at last year's tournament by battling her way through to the semi-finals. And she'll be aiming to improve on that achievement this time around.

The annual Dubai Open is rapidly becoming one of the top events in the tennis calendar. This year's competition attracted a roll-call of big names, including Mark Philipoussis, Tim Henman and Roger Federer.
