Already a hero to many on the pitch, David Beckham gets to play the role on screen as well in his new commercial for Pepsi, in which he appears alongside fellow international soccer stars including Roberto Carlos, Raul and Ronaldhino.

Set in a medieval context, the ad portrays the footie ace using his stellar football skills to help protect the protagonists' hoard of soft drinks from a gang of red-plumed marauders.

Attending the Madrid launch of the spot on Thursday, David had obviously been inspired by the two side plaits he wears in his latest Pepsi outing, and was sporting a dashing new plaited and beribboned 'do.

The two-minute slot, entitled Foot Battle, which follows on from Beyonce, Britney and Pink's outing into the arena on behalf of the soft drinks giant, was shot in the main square of the Spanish village of Medinaceli last July.

Its protagonists were apparently so taken with their warrior outfits, created by Gladiator costume designer Robert Allsopp, that they asked to hang on to them after filming was finished. "It took 20 minutes to put the warrior costume on… and it made me feel like someone out of Gladiator or Braveheart," said the England captain, who added that after appearing in the soft drink commercial he quite fancied the idea of appearing in an action adventure movie.

Making a sartorial statement as usual, David wore a dramatic fur-collar camel coat over a dark jacket, unbuttoned white peasant-style shirt and faded jeans at the Madrid launch.
