Wednesday was a starry night for revellers in London's Park Lane, as two celebrity bashes got underway on the same street. Hugh Grant was among the famous faces at the Starlight Ball in the Hilton hotel, while just up the road at Le Meridien Grosvenor House, a host of little screen stars, including a recently recovered Amanda Holden, were stepping out for the Royal Television Society Awards.
The castmembers of both EastEnders and Coronation Street met up at the RTS event, but it was the Rovers Return regulars who emerged victorious in the best soap category.
Golden Globe winner Ricky Gervais meanwhile scooped the best comedy gong for The Office. And the self-styled "fat bloke from Reading" promised he will soon be back with a new series entitled The Extras. "It's about a group of actors who are trying to get work but can't," he revealed. "I am going to play the lead."
None of the performers at the glitzy bash seemed to be suffering the same difficulties as Ricky's latest character, and the same could be said of the revellers at the Starlight Foundation event. Billie Piper, who has won rave reviews for her performance in The Canterbury Tales, joined the inimitable Mr Grant at the charity gathering.
