New York's Madison Square Garden received a super-charged dose of girl-power on Monday, when Beyonce Knowles brought the Ladies First tour to town. The Texan belle has spent the last few months travelling around North America, along with Alicia Keys and Missy Elliot.

Residents of the Big Apple turned out in force to see three of America's biggest female stars strut their stuff. And the audience was left in little doubt that this was to be a ladies-only affair when the inimitable Ms Knowles took to the stage.

"Do I have any naughty girls in the audience tonight?" she demanded. "I wrote this song for each and every one of y'all." There was also an unexpected surprise for Destiny's Child fans, when Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams sashayed onto the stage to help their bandmate with the hit Survivor.

Alicia Keys gave a similarly exuberant show, whipping the 20,000-strong crowd up into a frenzy. "Since I am home, let me see you get your asses out of your seats," shouted the Manhattan-native, much to the delight of her audience.

Perhaps the only downbeat moment came when the evening drew to a close. The girls have just five more dates before their final gig in California, and they're not looking forward to saying their goodbyes. "It's sad - it's like a TV show that's been going on for years," said Missy Elliot after the lights went down. "You know, we've been having a lot of fun and it seems like we're still just getting into it."
