George and Alex Best's nine-year marriage came to an end in a London courtroom on Wednesday, when a judge granted the couple a decree nisi.
The decision marks the end of a long and difficult romance blighted by George's well-publicised battle with alcoholism. In the end the reason given for the divorce was the soccer legend's affair with Gina Devivo last year.
Neither he nor his estranged wife were present for the ruling, but the former Manchester United star told reporters they had spoken on the phone and remained on good terms. "She was really nice," said the 57-year-old. "She just wanted to wish me well and said everything would be OK in the end."
"We were together for ten years and we went through a lot in that time, so of course there is sadness that it has had to come to this. But there is also an element of relief. The last few months have been extremely difficult for both of us."
It has yet to be decided who will take ownership of the couple's two red setter dogs. George has also asked for a number of artworks, which he says are in her mother's house, to be returned. But for the moment both parties seem happy that a line has been drawn under their relationship.
"There has been a lot of fighting, bitterness and harsh words flying around the public arena," admitted George. "But hopefully the divorce will see an end to all that."
