The star of Bend It Like Beckham may soon get the chance to meet her on-screen hero, because they have both been nominated for Emma Awards.

British actress Parminder Nagra, who is currently appearing in ER, has joined the England skipper on the shortlist for this year's Ethnic Multi-Cultural Awards. The annual prizegiving recognises contributions made to cross-cultural understanding in the UK.

Parminder is in the running for best actress, for her role in the British TV series Second Generation, while Becks is in line for the sports personality of the year gong.

"David Beckham plays an important role in today's multi-cultural Britain not only as an icon, but also as an inspiration to young people of all cultures," said a spokesman for the ceremony.

The race for best male actor looks set to be a close-run thing, with EastEnders' Gary Beadle going up against Holby City's Art Malik and Casualty star Kwame Kwei-Armah. Also among the hopefuls are Chiwetel Ejiofor, from Love Actually, and Hustle's Adrian Lester.

Beyonce meanwhile joins Missy Elliott, Outkast, The Black Eyed Peas and Norah Jones on the shortlist for best international music act. And the late Bruce Lee is to receive a lifetime achievement award, for his high-kicking contribution to cross-cultural understanding.
