The Olympic torch has begun its around the world journey in anticipation of the forthcoming games in Athens. And British sports fans will be delighted to hear it is to make its first appearance in the UK since 1948.
Over the next five weeks the flame will visit all five continents as thousands of torch-bearers take part in an epic international relay. When it reaches London on June 26 a huge concert will be staged to mark its arrival.
Seventy thousand people are expected to cram into The Mall, the ceremonial road which links Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace, when four-time Olympic gold medallist Steve Redgrave carries it into the heart of the capital.
The celebrations will then continue with a six-hour musical bonanza featuring some of the biggest names in rock. Ozzy Osbourne, Will Young, Emma Bunton and James Brown will all take the stage, before veteran rocker Rod Stewart gives the night's final performance.
"We wanted to stage and event that encompassed the ethos of the Olympic ideal, bringing it to the people of one of the world's most famous cities," said organiser David Campbell. "We are confident the Olympic Torch Concert will do just that."
