David Beckham has shown he's not afraid to laugh at himself by making a joke about the Rebecca Loos controversy. In a mock interview with The Fast Show's Ron Manager, the England skipper makes a light-hearted reference to the row which engulfed him not so long ago.
Becks found himself at the centre of a media furore last April when his Spanish PA claimed to have had an affair with him. David dismissed allegations that he had indulged in "text sex" with the PR girl, but in the new interview he pretends to receive a series of messages from a mystery friend.
The footie ace repeatedly interrupts his interviewer to look at his mobile phone, saying: "Sorry Ron, it's another message." And the 29-year-old also takes a swipe at his own high-pitched voice by inhaling helium during the chat.
At the end of their conversation the inimitable Mr Manager, who is better-known as comedian Paul Whitehouse, says: "Thank you David, straight man, family man, husband, gay man, white man, black man, Don Juan, stupid boy, Captain Courageous, model, footballer, ambassador and galactico. Isn't it marvellous!" The skit, filmed as part of the Sport Relief telethon, will be broadcast this Saturday on BBC1.
Across the pond in the United States, meanwhile, chat show host Jay Leno called on some performing sea lions to stand in for the footie ace and his wife. David and Victoria pulled out of a planned interview to extend their break in Morocco, leaving producers at the show with a hole in their running order. In the end they called on the animals from Seaworld to give a performance in place of their celebrity guests.
