Rome is not the sort of place to get flustered when a famous face stops by for a visit. But residents of the Italian capital would have been forgiven for feeling a little star-stuck on Thursday when a roll-call of the world’s biggest names in music jetted into town for the MTV Europe Awards.
Kylie Minogue was on characteristically dazzling form when she took to the red carpet in a black couture number, while British diva Jamelia was likewise dressed to impress in pink satin. But it was the American stars who shone brightest on the night, with US performers emerging victorious in almost every category.
Hip-hop duo Outkast took home the gongs for best group, best video and best song, while pop diva Britney Spears trounced critics by landing the trophy for best female vocalist.
Some 6,000 people were at the Tor Di Valle arena to see their favourite artists strut their stuff. Gwen Stefani gave one of the most memorable performances of the evening when she emerged from the darkness dangling from a giant clock. And controversial rapper Eminem made an even more dramatic entrance by driving a Panzer tank onto the stage when his turn came to step into the limelight.
If there had been a prize for most romantic couple, however, it would surely have gone to R&B heart-throb Usher, who arrived arm-in-arm with former supermodel Naomi Campbell. "I met [Naomi three months ago and it was like I’d been hit by a lightning bolt," he confessed. "We have a real special, special relationship. Naomi is a beautiful woman and I like her a lot." His elegant companion, who set the flashbulbs blazing in a glittering minidress, was also relishing the moment. "I’m having an amazing time," she said. "I love Italy."
