He's been dubbed "Chatshow Charlie" for his numerous appearances on TV, and now Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy has gone one step further in accepting a cameo role on the hit soap EastEnders.

The red-headed politician, who became Westminster's youngest MP when he was elected in 1983, has signed on to appear in a sketch which will form part of a one-off variety programme starring the Albert Square cast. He will star the Ghost of Christmas Past in the skit based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

A spokesperson for the politician said that Mr Kennedy had accepted the role because he thought it would be “fun”. He added: “It’s another way to talk to millions of people. If people are interested enough to have Charles Kennedy in something like this, it would be churlish not to accept.”
