If he has anything in common with his small screen incarnations, which have included Albert Square hardman Grant Mitchell and SAS officer 'Henno' Garvie, Ross Kemp is not a man to be trifled with. The casts of top medical dramas Holby City and Casualty might be forgiven for feeling a little apprehensive, therefore, as it seems the toughest nut on British TV will soon be taking charge behind the cameras of their shows.
Producers on the ailing soap opera EastEnders have managed to convince Ross to reprise his most celebrated role by offering him the chance to take over directing duties on other BBC series. Insiders say the actor will call the shots on a handful of episodes, while also working on some less high-profile projects.
When asked about his future with the national broadcaster, Ross appeared to confirm the news. "They offered me directing work which I really want," he revealed. "They said they'll put a couple of drama projects into development for me and at least one will be a short or series for transmission. You don't get better than that."
With EastEnders ratings spiralling downwards in recent months, bringing back its most famous villain is seen as a key element in reviving the show. And although Ross is a relative newcomer to the director's chair, Grant Mitchell certainly knows a thing or two about the medical profession. After all, his shady dealings and short temper have resulted in quite a few hospital visits over the years.
