Hugh Grant and Jemima Khan were among the crowds celebrating at London's Oval yesterday as England won the Ashes. The actor and his glamorous girlfriend joined cricket fans around the country in cheering Michael Vaughan and his team-mates to a historic victory over Australia.
Jemima's children Suleiman and Qasim, whose father is former cricketing ace Imran Khan, seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the event, leaping from their seats and punching the air each time hero batsman Kevin Pietersen hit the ball. And the two boys had plenty of reason to celebrate, as it is the first time in 18 years England has managed to win the legendary trophy.
They weren't the only famous faces turning heads at the south London venue, as Dame Kelly Holmes, Stephen Fry and former prime minister John Major were also among the throng.
The Queen meanwhile watched the game from Balmoral Castle, before sending a personal message of congratulations to the squad. "This has been a truly memorable series and both sides can take credit for giving us all such a wonderfully exciting and entertaining summer of cricket at its best," she said.
Tony Blair likewise praised the team, which narrowly managed to overcome a tough challenge from the Australians to land victory. "By bringing the Ashes back, you have given cricket a huge boost and lit up the whole summer," he said. "It has been sport at its best."
