The cast and crew of the hit series Lost have definitely found their way into the hearts of American TV fans after winning the coveted best drama gong at this year's Emmys. And the small screen's favourite castaways weren't the only ones with reason to celebrate, as Desperate Housewives and Everybody Loves Raymond were also honoured at the glitzy ceremony. Felicity Huffman, who is better-known as Wisteria Lane's stressed-out Lynette, picked up the trophy for best comedy actress despite a worthy challenge from her co-stars Marcia Cross and Teri Hatcher.
The enormously popular Everybody Loves Raymond, which has just come to an end after nine seasons, was likewise basking in glory after Doris Roberts and Brad Garrett were named best supporting actor and actress in a comedy. "This is the icing on the cake," said Brad. "Nine wonderful years on Everybody Loves Raymond and to finish it off with this is wonderful."
In recent years an increasing numbers of silver screen performers have been making forays into television, so it was small surprise to see several movie stars taking to the podium. Renowned Australian thesp Geoffrey Rush took home the gong for best actor in a TV movie, thanks to his much talked-about role in The Life And Death of Peter Sellers, while Gwyneth Paltrow's mother Blythe Danner won best supporting actress for the drama Huff.
Indeed even Captain Kirk himself put in an appearance, as William Shatner was on hand to collect a trophy for his role in Boston Legal.
His co-star James Spader, who was honoured for the second year in a row, made a memorable tribute to his mum. "I'd like to thank the academy and I'd like to thank my mother," he said, before adding: "And I'd like to thank my mother again, because I forgot to thank her last year."
