After honouring Spanish actress Penelope Cruz last week, France's cultural elite turned their attention to Irish musician-turned activist, Bob Geldof. He was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in a ceremony this weekend presided over by the country's culture minister, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres.
Arriving in a snazzy grey suit and unusually clean-shaven, Bob Geldof seemed to have spruced up his image for the event in Cannes. By his side was French actress Jeanne Marine, his partner of ten years, who looked thrilled that her man was receiving such recognition in her homeland.
And it was not the only accolade that the anti-poverty campaigner took home from his trip to the country. Bob was also named personality of the year at the NRJ awards for his part in organising the Live 8 concerts last July. Acknowledging the gong, which was handed over by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, the 54-year-old praised the French for their "good taste".
