Newlyweds Athina and Alvaro de Miranda have recently been pursuing the passion that first brought them together. The couple, whose lavish Sao Paulo nuptials were headline news in December, were taking part in a three-day showjumping event in Europe.
Love struck over three years ago when a teenage Athina met Doda, as he is known, while both were pursuing their love of horseriding in Belgium. Having expressed an interest in competing on the 2008 Greek Olympic team, the heiress, who owns several homes in the Belgian capital, has now returned there to train.
And having her new husband on hand could be an advantage for the aspiring equestrian as Doda was a member of the Brazilian team which picked up a bronze medal in the 1996 Atlanta Games and another four years later in Sydney.
The pair were certainly taking a serious approach to the event in Hasselt, with the 21-year-old heiress carrying out a thorough reconnaissance of the course, before tackling it with quiet efficiency.
Despite being one of the wealthiest young women on the planet Athina clearly has no airs and graces. She was happy to fetch snacks while her husband conferred with equestrian legend Neco Pessoa, captain of the Brazilian equestrian team and owner of the riding establishment where they first met.
