Celebs saddle up for Grand National silk sale

Interior designer Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen and top model Jodie Kidd are galloping into an altogether more competitive area of design. The two celebs are among a roll-call of British stars who have created jockey silks for the Grand National this coming Saturday.

And although people like Jeremy Clarkson, Andrew Flintoff and Mohammed Al-Fayed may not be the first you'd associate with chic apparel, they too are contributing unique jerseys for an online charity auction to raise money for Alder Hey hospital.

Jodie shows her passion for yoga by featuring an "Om" symbol on her effort, while the inimitable Mr Clarkson has made a more high-octane style statement with an image of a speed camera. There's a distinctly oriental flavour to Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's design, though the headline-friendly Harrods boss has gone for a tongue-in-cheek self-portrait.

Among the other big names who have done their bit for the fundraising appeal are Virgin boss Richard Branson, who couldn't resist using a "V" symbol, and Japanese artist Yoko Ono, who gave permission for a drawing by her late husband John Lennon to be featured. All proceeds from the silks, which are being auctioned on the Imagine appeal's website, will go to Europe's largest children's hospital.
