They say some things in life are free to those who can afford them and very expensive to those who can't, and that certainly seemed to be the case when Victoria Beckham swept into jewellery firm Asprey's flagship store on Monday. After an hour of negotiations with the company's chairman, Lord Dundas, the England skipper's glamorous wife succeeded in securing some impressive sparklers free of charge.
Victoria's visit to the Bond Street store wasn't motivated by a desire to enlarge her own collection of diamonds, however. Instead she had gone along to ask the Asprey boss, who is an old friend of the singer, to make a contribution to her forthcoming Full Length And Fabulous charity auction.
The mum of three, who was looking elegant in a retro-style Roland Mouret skirt accessorised with a vintage Hermes bag, will host a glitzy bash to raise money for Unicef and the Prince's Trust next month. She and her husband will welcome a roll-call of stars from the worlds of showbiz and sport when they throw open the doors of their Hertfordshire mansion for the pre-World Cup party.
Soul legend James Brown is expected to perform a one-off duet with Robbie Williams at the event. But David might be forgiven for being more interested in another musical collaboration, as World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst has agreed to sing with the Tonedef All Stars on a new version of the Dad's Army theme tune which is being recorded to celebrate England's latest bid for glory. Becks will be hoping the emulate the legendary athlete's success in the 1966 final, when he scored three goals against West Germany to win the sporting world's most coveted trophy.
