Paul McCartney, 63, and Heather Mills McCartney, 38, announced the end of their four-year marriage on Wednesday. Blaming constant media intrusion the couple said they had found "it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship".
"Having tried exceptionally hard to make our relationship work given the daily pressures surrounding us, it is with sadness that we have decided to go our separate ways," their statement added. "Our parting is amicable and both of us still care about each other very much."
Paul met the model and anti-landmine campaigner at a charity event a year after the death of his first wife, photographer Linda Eastman from breast cancer. In June 2002 the couple wed in a lavish ceremony at a 17th-century Irish castle.
The birth of a daughter Beatrice a year later seemed to cement their happiness. But reports of difficulties in the relationship surfaced last week after the millionaire singer was seen holidaying alone in France, while Heather stayed at their home in East Sussex.
