Tony Blair is used to his guests wearing smart suits not track suits and trainers when they visit Downing Street. But the British prime minister was happy to make an exception on Wednesday afternoon when he welcomed Robbie Williams and a large group of his soccer-mad friends to Number 11.
The 32-year-old star paid a visit to the politician's residence to publicise his Soccer Aid charity match, which will take place this weekend at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium. Proudly sporting training gear with a three lions crest emblazoned across the breast, the singer told his host of his commitment to combating Aids in Africa.
Saturday's match, which features a roll-call of British celebs, will see the chart-topper leading his England side out against Scottish chef Gordon Ramsay's rest of the world team. And with former professionals like John Barnes, Paul Gascoigne, David Seaman and Tony Adams in his squad, Robbie is hoping to make light work of the opposition. The chart-topper also counts actor Damian Lewis, singer David Gray and TV presenters Ben Shephard, Jamie Theakston and Angus Deaton among his team-mates.
Gordon also has a few aces in his pack, though, with French stars David Ginola and Marcel Desailly joining Italian legend Gianfranco Zola in the line-up. Former Westlife singer Brian McFadden will bring the luck of the Irish to the squad, while Olympic athlete Ben Johnson and Formula One driver Eddie Irvine are sure to set a fast pace.
