Well organised and in attacking formation, the England wives and girlfriends got ready to spend some serious cash. Storekeepers in the German town of Baden-Baden will be thrilled after the five-girl squad dropped more than £4,000 in a lightning spree on Monday.

Joe Cole's girlfriend Carly Zucker, and Elen Rives, the Spanish model fiancée of Frank Lampard, headed the team that stepped out to boost the European country's stagnant economy. "We're here to support the boys, but shopping is nice too," said 29-year-old Elen.

With them were Wayne Bridge's partner Vanessa Perroncel, Michaela Henderson-Thynne, Stewart Downing's lady love, and the sole blonde of the group, Lisa Roughhead, who is with Michael Carrick. First stop was the town's upmarket boutique Monika Scholz where the group flexed their gold cards, emerging with goodies from Gucci and Prada.

Next up was sunglasses store Albert, where they snapped up several pairs of shades costing £500 each. The ladies' final destination was local hair accessory shop Bijou Brigitte, to pick out a selection of hairpieces and costume jewellery.

Meanwhile England super-shopper Coleen McLoughlin got in some retail action of her own, running up a bill of over £300 in just ten minutes. Wayne Rooney's fiancée purchased two pairs of designer heels from Gucci and Christian Dior, as well as a couple of Dolce & Gabbana blouses.

They came, they shopped, they conquered. The England 'wives' impressed German shopkeepers so much that one even wished their other halves well in the on-pitch action. "I hope England play well so they stay longer," said store manager Peter MaalassaPhoto: © Rex
