Britney Spears' husband Kevin Federline, who is becoming something of a celebrity in his own right these days, has joined forces with Richard Branson to launch the 'Pennies for a Purpose' campaign.

The aspiring rapper was in New York's Times Square on Wednesday to do his bit in helping prevent the historic one cent coin being scrapped, and encourage people to maximise the use of their spare change. He was one of the first to sign a petition and contribute pennies to a Virgin Mobile penny truck in aid of good causes.

Having come under criticism in the past for spending his famous wife's millions, Kevin has recently been busy consolidating his own career. As well as his efforts to break into the rap scene, he made Britney proud when he won a modelling contract to be the face of Blue Marlin, a San Francisco-based clothing line. The photogenic 28-year-old has already shot the campaign, with the images due out in the US in September.

The couple, who have a nine-month-old son, Sean Preston, are reportedly planning to spend the summer in Hawaii as they prepare for the birth of their second child in September. In a recent interview a tearful Britney sang her husband's praises, quelling hurtful reports that their marriage was in trouble. "He cares so much, and his heart is awesome," she said. "He helps me. He has to. I'm an emotional wreck right now."

Kevin also has two children - daughter Kori and son Kaleb - from a previous relationship with actress Shar Kackson.
