It was a dream come true for Canadian Idol finalists earlier this week as they got up close and personal with their very own, homegrown idol Nelly Furtado.

The Grammy-winning songbird, whose sexy hit Promiscuous is topping the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, individually coached the young hopefuls prior to their first performances with a live band. “I told them not to be nervous,” explained Nelly. “To be confident.”

As well as helping contestants hone their talent, the Portuguese-Canadian songstress also shared tips on how to become a superstar. A multi-talented musician herself – she has played trombone, ukulele and keyboards since the age of 11 – the singer told her admirers that learning to play a musical instrument “gives you power”.

Describing the reality show is a great outlet to help young up-and-coming singers get their first record deal, the 27-year-old beauty says: “If I was a teenager now trying to get a record deal, I would jump at the chance to be on Canadian Idol.”
