England star Wayne Rooney, who almost invariably finds the back of the net on the football pitch, is hoping to score a winner on the best-sellers list as well. The renowned athlete could barely contain his delight as he turned out to launch the first volume of his autobiography this week.
The Manchester United striker unveiled the appropriately named tome, My Story So Far, in his hometown of Liverpool on Thursday afternoon. Wayne is no doubt hoping to emulate the success of David Beckham's My Side, which has sold over 500,000 copies.
Four more instalments are planned for the years to come with the young athlete charting all the ups and downs of his career. And if his composure and maturity at the launch was anything to go by the Boy Wonder, as he is known to many football fans, is already learning from experience.
The goal scorer earned a reputation for impulsive and occasionally angry behaviour in times gone by, but on Thursday he proved there were no hard feelings between him and United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. Portugal's hunky winger was roundly blamed for England's early exit from the World Cup, thanks to his involvement in Wayne's sending off, but the English star has called on fans to forgive and forget.
"Whenever England don't do well in a World Cup people look for a scapegoat and unfortunately a lot of people have turned to Cristiano," he said. "I spoke to him the night of the game and there were no problems… I would rather he didn't get any stick - you do not want to see any player get booed."
