London's Royal Albert Hall was awash with high-octane glamour on Wednesday night when a galaxy of showbiz stars turned out for this year's Mobo Awards. Big names like Aishwarya Rai, Jamelia and Rihanna dazzled fans gathered outside the venue as they sailed up the red carpet in a series of stunning gowns.
The Bollywood actress, who was presenting an award, lived up to her reputation as one of the world's most beautiful women when she made her entrance in a eye-popping golden gown. And former Mis-Teeq singer Su-Elise Nash made an equally unforgettable impression when she arrived in a midnight blue creation featuring a long train adorned with peacock feathers.
Once the ceremony got underway, however, it was newcomer Corinne Bailey-Rae who enjoyed the lion's share of the glory. The 27-year-old singer, who opted for a strapless vintage-style number, was named winner of the trophies for best newcomer and best female artist. "Even to be asked to come here is amazing, let alone to walk away with awards," she said.
Miss Dynamite's little brother Akala was equally delighted after he followed in his elder sibling's footsteps by winning the gong for best hip-hop artist. "I didn't expect this," confessed the 22-year-old. "I know the album did really well, but I was the least known in my category." Among the other stars given reason to celebrate on the night were soul singer Lemar, who was named best British male, and Texan belle Beyonce, who emerged victorious in the categories for best song, best video and best international female.
