Adoption reports rife as Madonna visits Malawi

Reports are circulating that Madonna is in the process of adopting a Malawi child, although last week the singer's spokeswoman denied any adoption had taken place.

The queen of pop is in the country to support construction of an orphanage, after motherhood prompted her to look for a project that would make a real difference. "Now I have children and now I have what I consider to be a better perspective on life – I have felt responsible for the children of the world," she told a US magazine in August.

The 48-year-old singer jetted into the southern African country on Wednesday and is staying at Kumbali Lodge with her British director husband Guy Richie, daughter Lourdes, nine, and their son Rocco, five. So far she has visited several orphanages where she has handed out translated copies of her children's book English Rose.

When asked about reports that the singer was planning to adopt, her publicist Liz Rosenberg said: "I can confirm Madonna is in Malawi on a private visit," adding: "Despite reports stating otherwise, she has not adopted a baby boy. She is building an orphanage and child care centre and is involved in other initiatives geared towards helping children orphaned by AIDS."

Ms Rosenberg has yet to confirm or deny this week's reports that Madonna has adopted a one-year-old boy called Davie from the Home Of Hope orphanage after bonding with him during an hour-long play session.

If she does decide to increase her brood through adoption, she will be following in the footsteps of Hollywood stars Meg Ryan and Angelina Jolie. Meg adopted a Chinese girl at the beginning of this year while the Mr And Mrs Smith actress has an Ethiopian daughter Zahara and a Cambodian-born son, Maddox.
