Victoria Beckham was looking characteristically elegant when she presented her new range of jewellery in Japan on Thursday. And it seems the former Spice Girl may soon have another title to go with that of style queen, as it has been rumoured her husband David is about to become a Knight of the Realm.

If Tony Blair decides to recommend the high-profile footballer in the 2007 honours list, Becks will become 'Sir David' while his glamorous wife will take on the moniker 'Lady Beckham'.

Whitehall sources say the prime minister, who is due to step down next year, is anxious to be seen as a populist leader. And there can be little doubt that the Beckhams are among Britain's best-loved and most respected public figures.

The Real Madrid star has, in the words of one insider, "become the enduring sporting icon of this generation", while his wife is known as the UK's most fashionable celeb.

If David does receive an invitation to Buckingham Palace, it will not be the couple's first trip there. Victoria was also at her husband's side when he picked up an OBE
