Britney Spears has filed for divorce from her husband of two years, Kevin Federline. The pop singer cited "irreconcilable differences" in legal papers delivered to Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday afternoon. The documents also reveal the 24-year-old is seeking custody of their two children, Sean Preston, who was born last year, and two-month-old Jayden James.
News of the split came just after Britney made an appearance on Late Night With David Letterman during which she showed off her toned figure and new bob hairstyle. The singer, who travelled to New York for the interview, was also spotted at a local ice rink holding hands with a mystery man.
Britney and Kevin first met in the summer of 2004 when he was still with the mother of his first two children, dancer Shar Jackson. He tied the knot with the Do Somethin' chanteuse a few months later in low-key ceremony in front of a select group of family and friends. Reports of cracks in their relationship began to appear earlier this year, however, although the songstress appeared on TV in June to affirm their romance was still rock solid.
Hopes their union would stand the test of time were scuppered on Monday, though. In the divorce petition Britney has asked that both parties pay their own legal fees and that there be no demands for spousal support. She has also requested "miscellaneous jewellery and other personal effects", along with any earnings generated after November 6, be kept separate. The performer, whose previous marriage to childhood sweetheart Jason Alexander was annulled after 55 hours, is estimated to be worth in excess of $125 million.
