Gordon Ramsay is known to most people as the fiery superchef with a penchant for bad language and temper tantrums, but to his four children he is of course simply daddy. Guests at the culinary whizz's 40th birthday bash got to see a softer side of the TV star as he celebrated with his wife Tana, and their young brood.

His daughters Megan, Matilda and Holly all wore special scarlet party frocks, while Holly's twin brother Jack was smart in chinos and shirt for the candle-lit do in London's Banqueting House. And their famous dad, who is the UK's richest chef - with a personal fortune estimated at £67 million - was clearly enjoying his big day, taking a well-earned breather from running his nine restaurants.

On the night the Hell's Kitchen star was serenaded by the cast of hit musical Chicago and cut a fabulous mask-themed chocolate cake, as celebrity guests including fellow chef Gary Rhodes, restaurant critic Michael Winner and newsreader Kirsty Young looked on.

It's a busy time for Gordon who is currently establishing a global fine-dining empire. He's due to open the first of three US-based restaurants in the Big Apple on Thursday. His London NYC eatery on West 54th in Manhattan is set to consolidate his presence in America where he's already known for his reality TV show.

Gordon isn't the only one in the Ramsay household making a name for themself in the culinary world. His stunning 31-year-old wife recently launched her own cookbook Tana Ramsay's Family Kitchen.

"Unfortunately it's doing really well," says a typically irked Gordon. "It bugs the hell out of me." But despite the bravado, his wife has revealed he's a different person to the one most people assume he is.

"Gordon can be fiery at work because he's a perfectionist and passionate about his job, so he takes it badly when things go wrong. But he doesn't shout and swear all the time at home, so I don't see that side of him. The time when he's most relaxed is lying on the floor with kids crawling all over him, just being daddy."
