Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik has confirmed his six-year relationship with TV weather girl Sian Lloyd has come to an end and that he is now dating Cheeky Girls singer Gabriela Irimia. The politician said it was "no secret" he was going out with the pop starlet, who first found fame with a single entitled The Cheeky Song: Touch My Bum.
"I can confirm I am in a relationship with Gabriela," said the 41-year-old, before adding: "I don't want to say anymore - I just want to keep it positive about Sian." News of the split sent shockwaves through political and media circles, as Lembit and his fiancée were regarded as one of London society's most stable couples.
The popular presenter said she called off their engagement two weeks ago, however, as he had become a "party animal" and as a result they had grown apart. "I wasn't sure what to do with the ring," she revealed. "My instinct is to keep it - after all, I wouldn't want to see it on the finger of a Cheeky Girl."
Gabriela, who is 17 years younger than her new boyfriend, has meanwhile denied being the reason for the break-up. Her mother has given her blessing to the new romance, explaining the MP had visited the family home in East Sussex. "She is a normal girl and he is a normal man, and he honestly has so much charisma and is so nice," she explained. "I saw it from day one - there is no doubt whatsoever that it is a genuine relationship."
