Pop veteran George Michael insisted members of the audience were the real stars of the show when he gave a special performance for 2,000 nurses on Thursday. The 43-year-old singer raised the roof at London's Roundhouse Theatre when he staged a free concert to say thank you to the dedicated men and women who helped care for his mother when she was battling cancer.
The chart-topping star has spent the last few months packing venues around the world with his silver anniversary tour. But Thursday night's gig was an extra special event. George wanted to make sure the National Health Service employees knew just how grateful he was for their hard work.
"This room is full of heroes," he told the crowd. "Society calls what you do a vocation and that means you don't get paid properly - I absolutely salute every one of you."
Dressed in a smart black suit, the performer belted out many of his most memorable hits, including Too Funky, Jesus To A Child and Last Christmas. And when the renowned crooner confessed he had a bad cold one of the nurses, true to form, threw a packet of tissues onto the stage.
"You can help me with the notes I can't reach," responded the singer with a smile.
