The new year got off to a rocking start for music fans as some of the pop industry's hottest talents staged spectacular concerts around the world. Among the performers strutting their stuff for the New Year countdown were Christina Aguilera, who took charge of the celebrations in New York, and Kylie Minogue, who made her UK stage comeback in London.
The American singer was in glowing form as she stepped into the spotlight, provoking a huge cheer from the estimated one million people packed into Times Square. And she wasn't the only festive treat in store for the revellers, as R&B diva Rihanna, dazzling in a glittering silver gown, was also adding zest to the celebrations.
Across the pond in Britain, meanwhile, Aussie songstress Kylie Minogue was wowing the audience at Wembley Arena. The diminutive chanteuse, who was giving her first concert in London since battling her way back from breast cancer, was clearly back on top form as she belted out a series of hits, culminating in a show-stopping performance of the infectious Can't Get You Out Of My Head.
Fatboy Slim led the celebrations on Brighton beach, where 20,000 people turned out to join him for a festive boogie. "There is nothing better than playing in your home town with a beautiful beach," said the Hove-based DJ. "I would like to hold a party here every year for the rest of my career!"
Enjoying rather more exotic climes were the glamorous members of Atomic Kitten, who sent temperatures soaring at a gig in Hong Kong. Meanwhile Britney Spears played host to an equally lavish bash in Las Vegas.
