Last year was a glorious one for Zara Phillips, who won a gold medal at the World Equestrian Championships and was also named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The next addition to her growing collection of silverware will be even more special, however, as she is now to be presented with an MBE by her grandmother the Queen.
Princess Anne's pretty daughter was named alongside veteran rocker Rod Stewart and House star Hugh Laurie in the New Year Honours list, which was unveiled on Monday. The 25-year-old is the first senior member of the Royal Family to receive such a tribute. "I'm honoured I've been recognised for my achievements in equestrianism and pleased British Eventing nominated me," she said. "I'm delighted for the sport."
Rod Stewart, who once made fun of Sir Paul McCartney for having a knighthood, meanwhile confessed to being overjoyed at the news he is to receive a CBE. "Although I'm living in California, I'm very proud to be British," he said. "We will be celebrating the good news later today."
And Hugh Laurie, who found international fame as maverick medic Gregory House, will no doubt be on rather more affable form when he picks up his OBE from the sovereign.
Other celebs to be honoured at Buckingham Palace include To The Manor Born actress Penelope Keith and England football hero Steven Gerrard.
