Dawn French has added yet another string to her bow, swapping her cassocks and bible for the operatic stage. The Vicar Of Dibley star is currently performing at Covent Garden's famous Royal Opera house in the comic opera La Fille du Regiment.

Tickets for the production in the heart of London's theatreland are high in demand after Dawn's fans learned off her latest role.

Wearing a silver wig and lilac dress, the comedian is appearing alongside virtuoso singers, including Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez and French soprano Natalie Dessay.

Unlike them, however, she won't be required to hit the high notes. Dawn, 47, has taken on a non-singing cameo as La Duchesse de Crackentorp in Gaetano Donizetti's 1840 work. The opera, which runs until February 1, tells the story of beautiful Marie, who as a baby was found on a battlefield and adopted by a regiment of soldiers.
