The biggest music awards night in the UK, the Brits, delivered more than a few surprises on Wednesday as jazz sensation Amy Winehouse beat Lily Allen to best female solo artist, while James Morrison appeared out of nowhere to scoop the best male artist accolade.
Sporting a skyscraper beehive which even managed to out-do host Russell Brand's manic locks, Amy treated the star-studded audience - which included Hollywood actress Toni Collette - to a rousing rendition of her hit single Rehab. The charismatic 23-year-old Londoner hadn't prepared a speech, as she thought the award would to go to Smile singer Lily. "I can't believe it. I'm over the moon," she said.
Victory sank in gradually for soul singer James, who told the crowd, "I'd just like to say I can't believe I'm here. This one's for every singer-songwriter still playing in pubs." Other home-grown talent being feted on the night included Arctic Monkeys, who scooped the best British group and album gongs, while Take That earned the best single title for their hit Patience.
The boyband, who last appeared at the Brits in 1994, are enjoying a meteoric comeback - thanks in part, says Gary Barlow, to former bandmate Robbie Williams. "We should thank him because I honestly think if it wasn't for him and for his huge success, there wouldn't still be the interest there for us that has put us back on the map," he said at rehearsals for the event.
Other prizes went to Oasis, for their outstanding contribution to music, and The Killers - best group and album titles - while international awards went to Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado as best male and female artists.
