Not many pop-stars have a day named after them, but Nelly Furtado's native Victoria in British Columbia has done just that for their hometown sweetheart. The Grammy-winning star, who was born and raised in the picturesque city on Vancouver Island, naturally looked thrilled as the first day of spring - March 21 - was officially proclaimed Nelly Furtado Day.

"Thank you Victoria. Happy spring," said the 28-year-old chanteuse, who got a little emotional as she thanked her family, the teachers who influenced her life, and the people of Victoria for helping her achieve international music success.

"I loved being on this stage," said the mum of one of Victoria's Centennial Square, where she first performed when she was just nine years old. "I sang a song about Portugal in Portuguese with my four-string ukulele, and I wore a folkloric outfit," she said. "It was wonderful to have a platform to express myself and that's all I'm really doing is expressing myself."
