With a title like Age Of Darkness filmgoers could have been forgiven for thinking the latest work of Quebec-born filmmaker Denys Arcand would close Cannes on a less than light note. But while the festival has been dominated by films tackling hard-hitting subjects, the movie - the final installment in a trilogy - was surprisingly humorous. "It's the most extreme, the most desperate, and yet it's the funniest," says Denys.
The 65-year-old writer-director is perhaps best known for the trilogy's Oscar-winning second film The Barbarian Invasions, a sequel to The Decline Of The American Empire. "They're big titles, and the films are small films," joked Denys, who hit the red carpet with the film's leading ladies, German beauty Diane Kruger and French actress Emma de Caunes, as well as Chanel fashion maestro Karl Lagerfeld.
Also on hand to mark the close of the festival in glamorous style was Elton John and his Toronto-born film producer David Furnish. The pair attended Friday's star-studded Chopard party at the Rosarie Club where they were joined by a host of other high profile celebrities including Jude Law, Toni Collette and burlesque artist Dita von Teese.
