There was a time when kooky British sci-fi show Doctor Who was hardly perceived as the cutting edge of cool. Those days are long past it seems.

Since David Tennant stepped into the tardis as the tenth Time Lord the show has gone the way of series such as Friends and Extras in attracting big names for cameo roles - the most recent of which looks set to be David Bowie.

The Ziggy Stardust singer is considering following in the footsteps of pop princess Kylie, who is to appear as a waitress on the Titanic in a Christmas special. TV bosses, who were apparently impressed by the music legend's performance in fantasy thriller The Prestige, think his "other-worldly look" is perfect for the show and have approached him to take on a small role as a villain.

"(David) said he'd be interested as long as he's not subjected to hours of make up," says a source from the show.

If he signs on for the role the 60-year-old music icon will do battle with the Doctor in a two-part special to be shown next year. In it the singer's character kidnaps crime novelist Agatha Christie, who in real life disappeared mysteriously for 11 days in 1926.
