Gorgeous gowns at this year's Brit Awards Welsh singer Duffy confirmed her position as the hottest new star to emerge in 2008 at Wednesday's Brit awards. A virtual unknown just 12 months ago, the Nefyn-raised songstress was the toast of the glitzy ceremony, winning three of the coveted trophies.
Her haul of gongs included best album for her debut disc Rockferry, which sold 4.5 million copies around the world, best breakthrough act and best British female solo artist.
She told the audience: "I don't mean to be greedy! It's a real honour to be here. I don't know what this means, but it's a good job my mum didn't have a boy."
By the time she collected her third award the 24-year-old – who regularly draws comparisons with Dusty Springfield - was visibly struggling to contain her emotions and let slip an expletive in the excitement of the moment.
Duffy did lose out on one gong, however, the award for best British single, voted for by viewers during the show, as Girls Aloud won their first Brit Award in seven years for The Promise.
The night's other big winners were Paul Weller, who was named best male solo artist, and veteran metal band Iron Maiden, propelled to the top of the live act category by an internet campaign mounted by their followers.
Performances came from Coldplay, who played a lively set despite walking away empty handed after four nominations, Bono's outfit U2 and Kylie Minogue.
The Australian diva provided glamour and giggles as she took to the stage with Gavin And Stacey stars James Corden and Matthew Horne in the role of unlikely backing dancers.
