Coldplay, Kylie Minogue, Barry Gibb and Olivia Newton-John were just some of the top international performers taking part in a pair of charity concerts Down Under at the weekend. The music names were supporting Sound Relief, two simultaneous concerts in aid of the victims of Australia's recent devastating bush fires.
Chris Martin's crew headed the bill at Saturday's gig in Sydney. "Today is the only day... when we can claim to be honorary Australians," Gwyneth Paltrow's 32-year-old husband told the excited audience.
Also taking to the stage in Sydney were Bee Gee Barry Gibb and Olivia Newton-John – both of whom were Australia-raised. The stage veterans closed the concert with aplomb, performing a series of duets.
Across the country in her home city of Melbourne Kylie treated 80,000 people to a moving rendition of I Still Call Australia Home. Her tribute followed a minute's silence and a special message of support sent via satellite from Prince William and Prince Harry.
"For those survivors who have lost someone they love, we can only imagine what they are going through," said William, who went on to praise the "amazing and heroic efforts of the emergency services" and the "unsung heroism of countless people who risked their lives to save a neighbour or a stranger".
