Clearly on the same wavelength, Katherine Jenkins and Darcey Bussell dazzled the crowds at the Classical Brits in what looked like a cleverly co-ordinated appearance.

The soprano – stunning in a ruffled fishtail affair from J Mendel that fitted well with her friend's hot pink gown - joked: "I promise we didn't phone each other and plan it beforehand".

Welsh diva Katherine went on to admit to having butterflies about her duet with Placido Domingo. "I'm singing with Placido tonight, so that will be when my nerves kick in because I want to do well," she confessed.

Other notable arrivals included Laurence LLewellyn Bowen, whose wife Jackie has recently shed several stone. She was showing off her newly slimline figure in a super-chic halterneck jade creation that made her look like a Hollywood goddess.

Inside the venue the real business of the evening – the prizegiving – got underway, presided over by a scarlet-clad Myleene Klass. The glamorous mum kept her cool, despite juggling hosting duties with caring for her toddler Ava, who was backstage.

One of the highlights came when the Duchess of Cornwall, supremely regal in a blue taffetta ball gown, presented Jose Carreras with a lifetime achievement award.

The audience was also treated to a spine-tingling performance of River Of Light from Faryl Smith, the 13-year-old schoolgirl who rose to fame on Britain's Got Talent.
