Guy Ritchie's London watering hole might not be popular with his neighbours, but it certainly remains so with its celebrity clientele. Amid controversy surrounding the Punchbowl – nearby residents have asked for a review of its license because of the disturbance it brings to the neighbourhood – famous friends of the British director stopped by the pub on Tuesday to show their support.

Close pals Sting and Trudie Styler, who introduced Guy to ex-wife Madonna at a dinner party in 1998, popped out to help prop up the bar in Mayfair.Following an emerging trend among celebrity men including Brad Pitt, the Police singer sported a new shaggy beard as he arrived with his wife.

Once inside they had the chance to mingle with fellow celebs including model Helena Christensen, Sienna Miller's step-mother and interior designer Kelly Hoppen and David Furnish.

The presence of Elton John's partner is a reassuring sign that the Rocket Man is on the mend.

Hours earlier that day David was seen arriving with Matt Lucas to pay a visit to the musician, who was hospitalised on Friday. But he was able to leave Elton's bedside to see his friends that evening.

Since Guy and Madonna were first linked to the traditional English pub early last year the Punchbowl has become a favourite for those in the spotlight.

Justin Timberlake, Prince William, Jude Law, Robert Downey Jr and Paris Hilton are just some of the names who have been spotted enjoying a drink in the 1750s-built establishment.
