Only time will tell which star will emerge as the winner of this year's I'm A Celebrity..., but Sam Fox is already giving her fellow contestants a run for their money. The former glamour girl has set a high standard from the outset of the show, showing her mettle with a brave performance in the very first challenge.

Her impressive feat came about after all 11 stars - then sipping champagne and enjoying canapes on a luxury yacht - were faced with their first dilemma.

They had to choose one man and one woman to swim to a nearby island to spend the night and participate in the first task there, while the others returned to their hotel. Straws were drawn and Sam and celeb chef Gino D'Acampo soon found themselves heading for the shoreline.

They tested their nerves against crabs, an octopus, eels and huge water spiders - which they had to hold in their mouth for 30 seconds - to try to win food and beds for the base camp. Sam proved bravest in the spider task, performing with real concentration to help win a total of nine stars for their fellow celebrities.

"I'm frightened of all these things," admitted the 43-year-old. "I want to come out and say I'm not frightened of these things any more.

"Meanwhile the other hopefuls were split into teams, with snooker player Jimmy White, dancer Camilla Dallerup, interior designer Justin Ryan and former Hollyoaks actor Stuart Manning given horses to trek through the bush.

Colin McAllister, EastEnders' Lucy Benjamin and former Misteeq star Sabrina Washington made their entrance by jumping out of a plane at 12,000ft.

And the remaining stars – actor George Hamilton and How Clean Is Your House's Kim Woodburn - made their way to the base camp on foot.

Despite the fact the celebs have only just arrived in the jungle, there might be a hint of a romance already on the show between Stuart and Sabrina, who has said she is looking for love on the show.

"Stuart has been following Sabrina round like a love-sick puppy," revealed one ITV source. "And she has been lapping up the attention and flirting outrageously."

But the current harmony in the camp may well be disrupted when Katie Price makes a late arrival on Monday.
