Football star to doting dad: Wayne Rooney in his element as he debuts baby Kai

May 10, 2010

His football season didn't end quite as he had hoped, but Wayne Rooney found his six-month-old son was all the reward he needed. The 24-year-old sports star – whose team Manchester United were pipped to the Premier League title by rivals Chelsea at the weekend – celebrated the end of the 2009-10 term not with a trophy, but with his little boy Kai, who joined his famous father on the pitch at Old Trafford.

The first time father and son have been snapped together, it was immediately evident how much proud Wayne revels in his parental role.

As for Kai, who was dressed in a mini football strip with 'Daddy' printed on the back, he seemed like a natural on the pitch, as at ease in front of the 75,000 fans as his dad.

Liverpool-born Wayne soon faces the prospect of spending time away from his family, when he jets to South Africa this summer with the rest of the England squad. It will be the longest that he has been away from his son, who was welcomed into the world in November.Fatherhood has certainly changed the footballer, who recently revealed he now prefers nights in with his wife and child than nights out partying.

"I don’t think it has changed me as the person I am but it has just added something different to my life in a great way. Its different and hard work, but a great feeling," he told The People."Now I have someone to look after and I just want to be with Kai and Coleen as much as possible."
